About

Freedom First

The Hungarian freedom fighters of 1956. Their heroic stand that October, sixty years ago, brought them world renown and marked the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union. They set in motion a process that would unravel communism’s oppressive grip on the freedom-loving people of Eastern Europe. The freedom fighters were students and teachers, factory workers and craftsmen, men and women, young and old, and the revolution they bravely took up that sunny autumn day, October 23, 1956 would eventually lead to freedom’s victory in 1989.

This blog commemorates the 60th anniversary of that great uprising. Freedom First is dedicated to the heroism and sacrifice of the freedom fighters of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and all who supported them.
