Warsaw Pact signed

The Warsaw Pact is signed, whereby the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc countries enter into a military alliance. In part a response to NATO, it also exists to justify the continued presence of Soviet Army troops in Eastern Bloc countries now that the Allies have removed their troops from Austria, since the explanation that the troops were required to protect the supply lines is no longer valid.
